Cub Scout Day Camp 2009 – American Heroes

By 3074 Cubmaster, July 30, 2009 12:22 pm

Day Camp 2009. American Heroes.

I would like to thank all the leaders and the cub scouts that made it
out to Day Camp this year. We started with a lot of rain on Thursday
followed by a beautiful day on Friday and mix on Saturday. A lot of
fun was had by all. There was Ohio Edison, Asian Sun, Mounted Police,
the Bomb Squad, the NASA bus and the PT Cruiser as special guests.
Then, of course, we had BB guns, Archery, Swimming Pool, Lake and
crafts, not to mention the trading post with food, toys and Sno-
cones!

Thanks to Nan Brown, Gene Bunner and Carrie Bunner as our Chaperons
for the week.

Thanks also go out to Pam Ferguson, Melissa Freiman, Libby Kirkendall
and Pam Nichols who worked on Staff.

Remember…
2010 is 100 years of Scouting.

Webelos Resident Camp 2009

This was the first time I went to Camp Akela (I have gone to Camp
Algonkin at 7 Ranges with the Boy Scouts.) We had three adults and 5
Webelos from our pack. Upon arrival we registered and made our way to
the camp site where we got our gear into our tents and set up our camp
site. We were escorted over to Camp Algonkin to take the swim test
(WHAT A HIKE, UPHILL) and then returned. On Monday and Tuesday
mornings, our boys took classes for Activity pins. There was a
fishing derby, a trip to the Algonkin Trading Post (where we also
walked to the Boy Scout Camp, followed by a stop at the lake for more
swimming). Different activities in the afternoon included: BB guns,
archery, paintball guns, action archery and a tomahawk throw. Tuesday
night was camp honors (H.A.W.K. Honor Akela with Knowledge.) There
was an adults vs. Staff volleyball game on Monday night as well.
(Staff won 2-1, oh well, maybe next year)

I strongly recommend Webelos Resident Camp for all Webelos. The Camp
Staff was wonderful with skits or songs at all the meals. The tents
that we stayed in are the same as the Boy Scouts use at their camp.
We had a little issue with Daddy Longlegs (and were informed they are
not spiders but actually part of the Scorpion Family) in the tents.

Kelly

Quail Hollow Campout and Graduation

By 3074 Cubmaster, June 1, 2009 12:16 pm

Greetings one and all,

I just wanted to thank each of you for making the Graduation Camp Out a success! I think the boys had a good time and that is most important (Keep it Simple, Keep it Fun). How many times did the boys go to the cemetery? Too many to count! I still have not been to there but I did bicycle the mountain bike trail in 2008. I think the cemetery would have been more fun!

We have Webelos Resident Camp (WRC) and Day Camp coming up. June 6 at noon we are having Day Camp and WRC sign up. Please contact each boy in your den to remind them to come sign up and bring their completed Health Form. Remind the parents that if their boy sold two boxes of candy the Day Camp fee is already paid.

I am advocating the fall hiking spree (we take the kids to five and encourage them to have their parents take them on three to earn their hiking staff.) Part of the Scouting program is outdoors and physical fitness – putting the “outing” in Scouting.

Best wishes to all.

Well it’s time to return to school and all that comes with it. Like friends that you only see at school, those new kids that you’ve never seen before, and those you wish you didn’t have to see.

While in school you think that you only learn from what’s inside the books but, just like in scouting we learn from everything that’s around us and change as we learn and grow.

This year see how many new friends you can make and notice if any old friends drop from your side as you pick up new ones. See what you can do to hold on to both friendships for years to come.

Remember to “Do Your Best”

After reading the Easter Prayer in unison Sunday I sat back down and looked down at my blue & gold Cub Scout socks (they matched my Scooby Doo tie!) I thought the prayer would read well as a Scout. This is it revised:

In our scouting faith, let us transform the world.

May we help, not hurt.

May we forgive, not hate.

May we walk together, not apart.

May we be gentle, not quick to condemn.

May we bring peace, not a sword.

May we hope, not be hopeless.

May we be caring, not uncaring.

May we be spiritually filled, not worldly guided.

May we be scouts to neighbor, friend, co-worker, and even a stranger.

May we be scouts to everyone. Amen

I missed the next hymn thinking about this (A.D.D.) but snapped out of it in time for the Gospel lesson John 20:1-18

Should i blame this on A.D.D.? On zoning out on my socks? Or on the higher power that leads me to put the socks on?

Please feel free to use this for openings & closings.

Well there’s no place like home. As a Commissioner for our district I stepped in to help with this year’s F.O.S. pledge drive and have been visiting Blue & Golds and Court of Honors seeing the way things are done outside our house. I can’t say a bad thing, all I can do is smile. From the beginners to the pros, leaders getting up in front of their units and digging into their program bag, some forgot it in the other bag though and stumble a bit but still provide a great show of love for the boys and scouting .

My ventures have taken me away from our home, but when I step in to look in on my leaders again all I can do is smile for there is the same thing I’ve been seeing. A bunch of big hearted people doing their best to help make good boys into good men.

God bless the children and those that serve them.

Well it’s February. Time for Valentines, candybar sales, Scout Sunday’s, Blue & Gold banquets and Pinewood derbies. Wow! Its’ also time for leader burn out. Committees and Cubmasters should help in getting your leaders help with set -up and planning from parents, charter members, retired scouters and community.

Did ya know- As of Jan. 7 2007 there are 11,695 units , 368,420 youth and 154,751 adult leaders of the BSA in the United Methodist church.

Until we meet again, Cubmaster Carter

I sat on a Life scout’s Board Of Review the other day and he talked about wanting to earn his Black Belt in Kung Fu. I thought; does it stop there? Some may say no! Black belts have degrees in rank too! But does it stop there? No it doesn’t, it’s a life long commitment. As is scouting, the goal is not just to earn top rank of Eagle it’s to learn the discipline, to do the good things you do while earning the rank and to keep learning while teaching others along the way through Scouting and life. A Grandmaster of Kung Fu never stops learning as should the Eagle someday become the Scoutmaster.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! With all that’s been done in the past few years at Pack 3074 I want to say it has been the best of times being your Cubmaster.

As of January 31, 2008 I will become the Pack Trainer and help the leaders do their best to serve the boys of the pack.

3074!…YEAH THAT’S US!

Has anyone ever read these things? Let me know, will ya!
